The Big Flood
|
In summer 2002 not only the water table of river Elbe has exceeded all records since start of monitoring. Also the ground water level rose up to never known levels. One effect of this exceptionel event was the necessity to check basic values for static calculation of buildings. Especially the level of the so called "Hundertjährige Hochwasser" (the highest expected ground water level within 100 years) had to be newly evaluated. Because of the hydrological situation that both rivers in Dresden, Elbe and Weißeritz, had very high flood level. The following ground water wave was unexpectedly high.
Therefore the very newly built shopping centre "Altmartgalerie" was endangered to get seriously damaged. Immediate actions avoided worst the case but for the future flood protection a permanent technical solution had to be developed.
For this reason BHG Brechtel GmbH was awarded the contract to build a collector well next to the building. Four laterals of the collector well were positioned under the foundation plate of the shopping center which is nearly completely surrounded by a concrete trench wall. The aim is to controll the ground water level in this limited area and to lower it in case of a flood situation.
The challenge for BHG Brechtel GmbH were the difficult logistic conditions. The collector well had to be built while the shopping center was open for customers. Our entire equipment especialy the big excavator had to be transported through a very small access.
With the experience and expert kwnowledge of our staff the collector well was successfully constructed within a very narrow time frame as contractually agreed.
